This is an intriguing and intelligent mystery that will keep you guessing from start to finish. There are lots of clever twists and turns solving the old secrets and the new mystery. Enjoy!
In Dubious History, a murdered writer researching the history of a small Virginia town leaves his nephew, Zack Honeychurch, also a well regarded historical novelist, a clue to his demise in a note hidden in an antique desk that says, "The key to the present lies in the past." Nothing could be more apt in describing this murder mystery by P. H. Densen which is also a tour de force historical novel from start to finish. If you have the energy to follow all the clues, family connections, genealogies, and historical references (and numerous red herrings!), you will be rewarded with a masterful rendering of a small hamlet roiled by scandal, terrorism, and murder. The story begins and ends in Hutchington, Va. "a quiet town nestled in soybean country" near Richmond. But along the way be prepared to travel to both present and colonial Philadelphia, Boston, England and Scotland as Zack, with help from his sexy wife Mariah, and his informal troupe of investigators, culls shreds of evidence from the past and present in order to finish the town's history that his uncle started, while also chasing a serial killer who might also be after him, and saving the local Masonic lodge from destruction. Denson has a knack for giving the reader a feel for life in the 1700's via numerous letters written between family and friends, and through a journal from a member of the First Continental Congress that Zack discovers in his research. As an added bonus Denson also delves into the history and significance of Freemasonry. The only quibble might be that the technology of the story (circa 1996) which sometimes plays a pivotal role in the plot is already outdated by today's standards. But this is like saying that "City Lights" should have been a talkie just because it could have been. The beepers, pagers, missed faxes and e-mails that drive the plot were cutting edge at the time the story took place. That's all that really matters. If you have a hankering for a historical novel, murder mystery, and educational expose' all wrapped into one nice package, Dubious History is for you.
