Zombie Apocalypse Florida Part 2, by Larry Brasington (ASIN B00CC2HC50, Amazon Digital Services, Inc.) is one of several digital titles by Mr. Brasington, who also writes under the name of Howard Parker. Brasington has written in a number of genres including a handful of Zombie themed short stories that combine zombie menace, action and humor. This offering is a follow up to Uncle Hank's Cabin and the Zombie Apocalypse Comes to Citrus County Florida" (Florida Apocalypse). Zombie Apocalypse Florida Part 2 is a quick, fun read that evokes emotion, a sense of whimsy and all the seriousness zombie stories deserves.

The story is set in Gainesville, FL and uses many street and place names from that lovely city. Gainesville being a college town, the story is populated with bright, smart ass characters that identify the zombie problem long before the older people (i.e. in their 30's)do. The "Older" folks swing into action though when the threat becomes clear.

There are three main characters. Jessica Lake is a pretty college student who's first to discovers the zombies after a night of partying but shows she's got spunk and the ability to take out zombies. Police Detective Sam Fry is a fit, good looking guy in his 30's who is at the right place at the right time. Fry adapts quickly to the zombie threat and leads a mission to rescue a group of children trapped by the mostly dead. Fry's partner Detective Sergeant Ewanda Phillips is a no nonsense woman who displays her courage and is a good foil for Fry.

The characters and their actions are believable, assuming a zombie outbreak. Each main character has an identifiable voice and exhibits evolving emotions and abilities. I identified with Fry who was caught in an unbelievable situation but rolled with the punches to do his job. It might be a zombie fantasy but that's what believable characters do.

There are several memorable scenes. When Jessica runs away from the first zombie she discovers a clutch of guys knocking back beers at a nearby bar. These guys help Jessica by pelting the zombie with empty beer bottles, not the best weapon of choice. Jessica, her courage growing, knee caps the zombie with a bar stool. In a situation at the local hospital the number of zombies has grown. Fry and company are dropping soulless corpses left and right. Jessica, without a gun, grabs a fire ax and chops a swath through the zombie hoard. It ain't Tolstoy, but it's not meant to be. The story is intended to be light, humorous and compelling and it succeeds.

The plot developed in an orderly way, progressing from the discovery of the first zombie to an outbreak of the zombie infection at the local hospital that treated early victims. Taking proper precautions, are we? The story had good variations in tension and a good pace. Dialogue is sparing but effectively reveals the characters thoughts and actions. This is an action driven story and it works well. Action scenes were plausible and exciting. You can feel the tension and hear the gun fire. There was more than a hint of humor, mostly tongue firmly planted in cheek, and even the suggestion of some future romance.

An inconsistency early in the story disturbed a previous reviewer. I didn't notice the offending issue. Part of the beauty of digital publishing is the ability to make changes on the fly. I can only assume Mr. Brasington made a correction. I did see some misplaced or misspelled words but I'm sure those too will be corrected and they did not detract from my enjoyment of the story.

Zombie Apocalypse Florida Part 2 by Larry Brasington is a fun read and well worth any zombie fan's time.

Zombie Apocalypse Florida Part 2 Gainesville eBook Larry Brasington Reviews

This is what I found on page one Tina is driving a Mustang which on the next page turns into a Corolla. Also, if Jessica felt in danger enough to need to call for help, why on earth wouldn't she do it in the safety of her own car (which she happened to be standing next to)? Too many inconsistencies and scenarios aren't well thought out at all. Nice try though.
