I think the cover of this book got my attention first. It just looks cool. And it's ironic, because after reading the book, I don't think the cover matches the story. This is a romance in the science-fiction genre. And I am giving it 4 1/2 stars, which is ALSO ironic because I am not a sci-fi fan. Sci-fi is never my 'go to' and quite often my 'no thanks.' So glad I took a chance on this book. This story is sweet and romantic and beautifully written. The author has a unique style: she largely is 'reporting' or narrating the story. What little dialogue there is seems to be 'narrated' to the reader. (Hard to explain but it feels very different than regular character interaction.) The author also hints at things and gives clues to things without coming right out and stating them. Sometimes I find that frustrating in a book but in this case, she did such a good job. There were enough 'bread crumbs' so the reader knows exactly what the author is trying to convey and her not saying them explicitly seems right.

Basics: There are three main characters in this story: Rhys and Jamie, blood relatives. Jamie is 5 and in the care of Rhys because his parents are gone. We never know exactly what happened to them but it's hinted that something bad happened on their planet. Okay, okay, I know. I said planet. The planets have letters and numbers and there must be thousands of them. But you only need to know that Jamie came from one. Rhys and Jamie live on DD-something now. And Adam lives on yet another planet.

On Adam's planet, being gay is NOT COOL. (The word gay is never even used in this book, that I can recall. But make no mistake, it's a m/m romance.) Adam is expected to be alone his whole life and basically fade away. He sees a personal ad that Rhys posted and they end up choosing a 'trial.' (Seeing if they are compatible.) The trip from Adam's planet to Rhys' sounds interesting. A few sci-fi tricks thrown in there which I didn't mind and sci-fi fans will probably enjoy a lot. There is a replicator (?), and UV protection shots - lots of details that add to the depth of the story.

Adam has a lot of time alone in his new home while Rhys is working and Jamie is at school. He does a lot of reflecting and it's really lovely. After some time, it dawns on him that his mother must have known about him. She didn't teach her other children the things she taught Adam. Adam thinks she was preparing him for a different life than one on his home planet. Adam relfects that his new routine is peaceful and calm. He starts to imagine enjoying such a routine every day. And Rhys asks him one day if he had a good day? Adam responds that it was perfect. Rhys smiles and reports, "Good. Because we do it all over again tomorrow." (And Adam is so happily content with that!)

There are so many times in this book that the writing struck me as beautiful. Rhys, reflecting on how lonely he had been and didn't know it. Realizing he had to make hundreds of decisions by himself every day, even mundane ones. But now he has Adam and he doesn't have to decide anything alone. Rhys noticing how Jamie and Adam interact. Adam carrying out kind gestures for both Rhys and Jamie. And on and on it goes.

If you're looking for something super smexy, this isn't it. It's pure loveliness as these kind, thoughtful MCs fall in love and become a family with Jamie at the center.

A quaint love story reminiscent of early American settlers. Very low-tech, it can easily be enjoyed by all. Contains occasional typos but not so bad as to significantly detract from the story line. Low heat, no violence.
